What is Packaging?

Packaging refers to the process of designing, evaluating and producing packages to protect a product from physical damages and to prepare goods for transport and warehouse logistics, sales, end use.

Now a days, Packaging is not limited to the protection of the product alone. It has been used as a marketing tool for building brand.

There are three levels of packaging.

1. Primary Packaging

  • Packaging that closely touches a product or referred as “Retail Package”.
  • It’s main goals are to protect the product and attract and inform customers.

2. Secondary Packaging

  • The package used to ship products already in primary packaging.
  • It protects products and provide branding
  • It facilitates the handling of smaller products by collating them into single pack.

3. Tertiary Packaging

  • This packaging used to ship the secondary packages
  • Tertiary packaging is typically not seen by retail customers.
  • It also referred to as a “Bulk or Transit Packaging”
